Sunday Trivia
In most churches, plans are being laid for the Advent and the Christmas season. To get us all in the right state of mind for such events, I give you this week's Sunday Trivia:
According to the biblical story, how many wise men visited Jesus and what were their gifts?
Keep that brain working on this day of rest!

It does not actually say in the Bible how many Wise Men there were. People assume it is three because of the three gifts they brought - gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Yeah. what hal said. :-D
yep, that's exactly what I was going to say.
I once preached about the "two kings" in Matthew, saying 1) first there are not three kings, like the songs, they are not called kings, 2) but there are two kings in the story, Herod and Jesus. but a smart confirmation class, said there were really three, because there was Herod AND his son.
I thought there was a fourth wise man, too. The TV Christmas specials wouldn't lie about something like that, would they?

Well done on a quick and accurate answer, Hal. And Joel, I too grew up as a child educated more about Scripture from movies/tv specials than the Book itself. How many people confuse the events of Exodus with those from The Ten Commandments?
Just so I don't sound too much like a dork, I did know that the Fourth Wise Man was a later story. I probably should have used a smiley or something. Although I didn't know who had actually written it - thanks, Diane! :)
But Pastor David brings up a good point: connsider how much mythology has grown up around Bible stories that are often-told, especially in secular settings. The Bible doesn't say what the forbidden fruit was, but it's so ingrained in us that it was an apple, that we assume it must have been in the Bible. Same with the magi, as Hal said. And let's not even get started on pictorial representations of Bible figures that look like American white-bread hippies.
I'll bet most people assume that Moses looked and sounded a lot like Charlton Heston. I know that's the mental picture I have. But I don't recall Heston having a speech impediment or a stutter in the movie, and the Bible is pretty clear that Moses had speaking difficulties. (It's been a long time since I've seen the Gospel According to DeMille; I could be wrong.)
